This is the highest distinction that Joint Commission International awards after carrying out an exhaustive audit in which more than 1,200 quality standards are analysed

Hospital Universitari Dexeus, part of Quirónsalud Group, has been accredited with Joint Commission International’s gold seal, the highest distinction awarded by this organisation, after an exhaustive audit in which 1,200 quality standards that the centre rigorously complies with were analysed.

Joint Commission International’s accreditation is the most stringent accreditation in the world for the healthcare industry and ensures that all hospital services and processes are focused on safety and quality as part of an ongoing improvement process.

In Spain, very few hospitals have the Joint Commission’s gold seal, given the challenging requirements it involves for the centre. Quirónsalud Group also owns Teknon Medical Centre in Barcelona; Quirónsalud Madrid University Hospital; Ricardo Palma Clinic in Lima (Peru); and Imbanaco Clinic in Cali (Colombia).

The first hospital in Catalonia to be accredited by Joint Commission as a teaching and university centre

The hospital has also been accredited as a teaching and university centre, which endorses the quality of the professionals’ training and the excellence of the research programmes carried out at the hospital. This accreditation confirms that the hospital meets the required standards when carrying out and promoting its lines of research and seeks to ensure that the professionals of the future work with the safety and quality standards pursued by this international organisation. Dexeus University Hospital has also become the first hospital in Catalonia -and the third in Spain- to be recognised as a teaching and university centre by the organisation Joint Commission International.

Continuous quality and safety improvement in healthcare services

By earning this accreditation, the group’s enormous effort to improve safety in healthcare has been officially recognised. The hospital has carried out multiple actions to promote a culture of safety throughout the organisation, working to improve the six international safety goals recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO): identify patients correctly; improve effective communication between professionals; improve the safety of high-alert medications; ensure safe surgery; reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections; and reduce the risk of falls.

The audit team has highlighted the involvement and motivation of Dexeus University Hospital staff in its projects to continuously improve the centre and the courage that both its management team and the rest of the professionals have shown when facing the challenge of this accreditation following the changes in processes and workflows that the centre has made due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The auditors also highlighted the excellence of the medical care provided by the Dexeus professionals and their vocation to care for people and to work constantly to improve the patient experience.

The organisations that have been accredited with this seal (which must be renewed every three years) are responding to an international demand for an evaluation to be carried out in the healthcare industry based on similar levels of quality and standards that are evaluable and comparable between different countries. The final objective is to foster continuous improvement.
